Pearls differ in size, shape, colour, surface and lustre. These details help you compare pieces; a type name alone does not describe an individual pearl's quality.

Freshwater and saltwater pearls

Freshwater and saltwater describe the environment in which a pearl forms. Akoya, Tahitian and South Sea are well-known saltwater cultured pearl types. Freshwater cultured pearls offer a range of shapes and colours.

Colour and shape

Tahitian pearls are not always black; their colours can include dark cool tones. South Sea pearls can be white or yellow-toned, including colours called golden. These colour descriptions refer to pearls, not the metal in a setting. Baroque describes an irregular shape rather than a pearl's species or origin.

Compare the individual design

Check the listed pearl type and measurements, the metal or finish, the fastening and the items included. A pendant may be sold without a chain. Use the individual product details to compare fit and scale; do not identify pearl type from colour alone. Where a specification is missing, contact us before choosing.
